Work Hard, Be Honest

Based on some encouraging feedback on recent posts I made to the Lost Clear Lake Iowa Facebook page, I decided to refresh, revise, and make available on Amazon a book about my grandparents that I had printed back in 1997. Several of my posts contained excerpts from the book. The book has special meaning because it started me on my memoir writing career that I continue yet today.

The book, newly titled Work Hard Be Honest, (LINK)  is a tribute to my grandparents, James and Mildred Ransom.  My dad, Jim, was the middle of their three children, Aunt Jean the oldest, and Uncle Ross the youngest. Aunt Jean will celebrate her 104th birthday this July. She is in good shape physically;  mentally she has her ups and downs. She remains as kind and gentle as she has been throughout her entire life. I sent a copy of Work Hard Be Honest to my cousin, Cathy, asking if she could share it with Aunt Jean.

Today I received this text from Cathy: “Mom loves the book! She said to tell you thank you.”

It’s hard to describe the feelings I had seeing Aunt Jean looking intently at the book. I don’t believe she could read/follow the stories, but I hope many of the pictures triggered fond memories that she might not otherwise have had.

For those who have not yet done so, I encourage you to write your family stories (start with those that are most meaningful and impactful) and include photos that help bring them to life. You’ll never regret it.

FYI - the post picture is a Ransom family photo taken in 1943.
